Austin City Limits is a music program on American television. Although primarily known for featuring country music, performers from folk, jazz, bluegrass, blues, rock and roll and other genres have appeared on the program. The show is a staple of PBS television stations.
Since the show first aired in 1976, it has featured hundreds of different artists. Austin City Limits is American television’s longest-running program featuring concert music.
The program is taped live by local PBS member station KLRU on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, in Austin, Texas, the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World,” images of which are seen in the opening credits. The backdrop for the stage features a mock-up of the city skyline.
The show is the inspiration for the Austin City Limits Music Festival, an annual live music festival at Zilker Park in Austin.
While still showcasing acts from a variety of musical styles, the show has recently begun to include more alternative rock and indie rock bands over the past few seasons.
