Dan, alterbridge, I think you’re both right both Andy and JP are awesome guitarists and I know Andy would be honoured to be considered as good as someone as successful as JP and a guitarist I know he admires. As for saying that’s all Andy does Dan, you are most definitely wrong there as alterbridge pointed out. And as far as Andy being a good guy, he is but his brother is super cool.
@dan2212089 i agree. hes a sound guy. i went to a paul gilert clinic with him in letchworth in 2005 and havent seen him since. i only just found out hes quite highly renowned lol
And whoever said John Petrucci is not as tight as he was, STFU! Check his recent performances with LTE, JP is as mind blowing as he ever was, even more so!
All of this comparison of Andy to John Petrucci is plain fkn stupid. For are a start they are radically different players both in style and technique. JP has vastly more experience at a level Andy is still aspiring to. Andy is by a fkn mile one of the most techically gifted and tasteful metal guitarists in the world today, there’s very few if anyone in his league in that genre. For how long Andy has been “around” he’s done phenominally well due to his dedication and awesome talent.
Musically petrucci is probably the best guitarist in the world, who can shred like crazy; but someone like satriani or lukather can hold one note on a bend and petrucci is gone. It’s the feeling that is more important.
Plus i saw John with Dream Theater the other night in Manchester ( england ) and he was as tight as ever. But yes i have seen him screw sections up also. Again to John’s credit, playing high maintenance music such as this, in your mid 40′s is pretty impressive.
I am fully aware of Andy musical capability. He is a fast rising guitarist, who will eventually be a huge idol in the guitar department ( I think ). He is also a nice guy, as i met him before he took off in the world. Yes i agree that John is not as tight as he was when he was Andy’s age, but What John creates is VERY diverse in musically and technically compared to Andy, at the moment. All of Andy’s solo music which he has released is great, i love it. but it is very samey at the moment.
i have seen dream theater at the ACC 4th best sound in the world, petrucci impressed me obviously, hes fucking fantastic – but he gets sloppy live – watch andy during solos, NEVER sloppy..
man thats where you have it all wrong, maybe petrucci can do a few nifty things simple because he DOES have 20 years experience, but from your comments I know that you haven’t looked into andy much at all, he has 15+ dvds imitating all of the TOP guitarists, megadeth, metallica, pantera, slash, satriani, avenged sevenfold, trivium, CLASSICAL, yngwie, james taylor, james blunt, damien rice, david gray, zakk wylde.. EXTREME tapping and sweeping dvds etc.. you question his musical technicality?!
now do you mean musically technical or playing technical? Because musically John could wipe the floor with Andy. Simply because he has an extra 20 years experience. And actually now i think about it, what Andy does is amazing, but that is all he does.
in my opinion andy james is way more technical player then petrucci.. show me a live performance of petrucci best solo and then ill show you one of andy that is better

this guy inspires me to play music.

Feeling is subjective my friend.

I don’t think age really makes a difference. He could still be playing DT’s stuff in his 60s. He’s just that good.
I’m just gonna say that Petrucci and Andy James are both fuckin’ insane guitarists and life would be much shittier without either of their music.
i agree

i used to get guitar lesson in person from andy
2 years of fun
andy james came to our college and did a demonstration cos he used to go there it was fucking imence
JP? and yeah i should have thrown in “he was my favourite guitarist of the festival” or something. but suicide silence was the best show for me
i believe he is fucking kick ass in the guitaring department, but JP was there so i disagree.
i was at that. he was the best guitarist there all weekend!

Shit… it looks pretty quiet on that side of the stage! the other side was rammed! I guess Andy’s more attractive than Josh ; )
